Lake Waikaremoana Information

Lake Waikaremoana

Lake Waikaremoana is in the north-east of New Zealand in the mountains of Te Urewera National Park. The walking track around Lake Waikaremoana is designated as one of the "Great Walks of New Zealand".

Lake Waikaremoana lies 610 metres above sea level and contains about nine cubic kilometres of water and reaches depths of about 256 metres. It was formed about 2200 years ago, when a massive landslide (about eight kilometres long and four kilometres wide) of huge sandstone slabs blocked the Waikaretaheke river.
